The holiday commemorates June 19th, 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. This presentation explains the events that led up to the day, the people who have ensured that it is remembered and why it is acknowledged by more Americans every year.
